Hiring a Pool Builder
Each year many people are frustrated by all the different things they have been told by pool builders, friends, and so-called experts. In many cases consumers want to know where to start when hiring a builder, choosing a pool type, or to obtain general swimming pool information, so that they can make a well-informed decision. We hope the information we have provided on this page will help you purchase a well-built pool that will be enjoyable for many years to come.
Are there Swimming Pool Codes or Standards?
Yes. The APSP (Association Pool and Spa Professionals) is the swimming pool industry's trade organization. As a non-profit organization, the APSP is dedicated to creating national building codes, workmanship and safety standards. The APSP also provides the most comprehensive training for the industry with the Certified Builder and Certified Technician programs. Most Counties and Cities have swimming pool building codes for at least fencing and electrical. The best advice is to check the codes in your area. If none exist ask your builder for the national building codes or standards.
How Do I Choose a Pool Builder?
Choosing a builder can sometimes be frustrating. Using a builder who is an NSPI member or a NSPI Certified Builder will help to ensure a well-built and serviceable pool.
Ask the builder for a copy of the NSPI workmanship standards or the companies building standards. This will inform you up front what to expect and help to reduce any potential misunderstandings down the road.
Ask for references and be sure to call each of them. Questions you may want to consider include:
- Did pool construction started on time?
- Did they keep you informed and communicate well?
- Did they keep the job site picked up and remove debris during construction?
- Did pool construction finished on time?
- Did they handle any problems or complaints in a timely and satisfactory manner?
Ask for proof of Liability insurance, Workman's compensation and completion bond
Bids- when obtaining more than one bid be sure to compare apples to apples. Be aware of a builder that is considerably lower he may not be providing you with the same quality of pool. Compare the pool design, equipment, workmanship and service.
